CAPSIZING IN RIVER, MANY CASUALTIES
Other , Brief

A boat capsized in the Kasai river, in the Bandundu province, killing 140 people. The accident happened yesterday and was just announced b the media today. The boat had left the river port of Muschie, 30 km. away from Bandundu, full of passengers and cargo, For the time being no cause has been given for the accident, but such events are not uncommon along the rivers of the DR Congo, which are used as transport waterways. The boats are often old and in bad state, subjected to very few regulations and safety controls to ensure they are seaworthy. The boats also lack lifeboats or even life vests and many of the passengers don’t know how to swim [AB]
