The very pivot of the peace process in northern Uganda and ardent defender of inter-community dialogue, monsignor John Baptist Odama, archbishop of Gulu, has been nominated president of the national Episcopal conference. “I am nothing special, I am the servant of the Church and God,” said rather modestly monsignor Odama after his nomination to as the head of the Ugandan Catholic Church, which accounts for the majority in this African country, having 19 dioceses and some 10.2 million faithful. The nomination of monsignor Odama took place in June during the plenary assembly of the Episcopal conference but national newspapers made the important announcement just today. Promoter of an approach that emphasizes dialogue and reconciliation, monsignor Odama is well known for his commitment within the ‘Acholi Religious Peace Initiative’ which in northern Uganda has played an important mediatory role in the peace process with the bandit militants of the so-called Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony[AB]
