The United Nations announced its collaboration and financial support in the investigations into the deaths of the late president Joao Bernardo Vieira and chief of staff Tagme na Waie, killed last March just hours apart in still unclear circumstances. The announcement was made by Joseph Mutaboba, the Secretary-General’s Representative in Guinea-Bissau and head of the UN Peacebuilding Support Office in the country, at the conclusion of a series of meetings with local magistrates and the chief Prosecutor Luis Manuel Cabral, who is heading the investigation. Mutaboba said that the UN will send experts to collaborate with a team of local investigators and will help cover the expenses of the investigation. According to the UN official, it is necessary to hear the testimony of the president’s widow, Isabel Vieira, who is currently in Senegal and considered a key witness in the case. [BO]
